Autogate Not Opening After Lightning in Damansara Jaya

Swing Arm Autogate Successfully Repaired Without Replacement by EE Automation

When an autogate suddenly stops working after a thunderstorm, most homeowners are confused and frustrated. This is especially common in Malaysia, where lightning and power surges frequently affect home electrical systems.

In this article, we share a real service case in Damansara Jaya, where a customer’s autogate completely failed after a lightning strike. We will explain what happened, what we found during inspection, and how the system was repaired on the same day.

Sudden Autogate Failure After Thunderstorm

Our team from EE Automation was recently called to a house in Damansara Jaya. We had previously repaired this customer’s swing arm autogate system a few months earlier by upgrading one side with a Tronica®-828 Stainless Steel Arm Autogate System, while the other side remained on the original setup.

However, after a strong lightning storm at night, the entire house experienced a power trip. The next morning, the autogate could no longer open or respond to the remote control. This type of situation is very common in Malaysia, especially during rainy seasons when lightning strikes can cause sudden voltage surges through home electrical wiring.

On-Site Diagnosis and Inspection

When our technicians arrived, the first step was to inspect the control system and power supply. Based on experience, lightning-related damage often affects multiple components inside the autogate system, not just one part.

After opening the control box, we immediately identified clear signs of electrical damage. The autogate motherboard was burnt, and the transformer that converts AC to DC power was also damaged beyond repair. These are critical components that control the entire system’s operation, which explained why the autogate could not function at all.

During the inspection, we also noticed something many homeowners overlook. There were ants and even small lizards inside the control box. Over time, insects entering electrical boxes can cause short circuits, corrosion, and hidden system failures. In Malaysia’s humid environment, this is a common but often ignored problem.

Same-Day Autogate Repair Solution

Fortunately, our team always carries essential spare parts in our service vehicle. This includes control boards, transformers, backup batteries, receivers, and mechanical components for different autogate systems.

With the damaged parts confirmed, we proceeded with on-site replacement. The burnt control board was replaced with a new autogate motherboard, a new 12V transformer was installed, and the backup battery was also changed to ensure system stability during power fluctuation.

After testing and calibration, the autogate system was fully restored on the same day. The customer was able to use the gate normally without any further delay or disruption.

Why Autogates Fail After Lightning

From our 30 years of experience in autogate repair in Malaysia, lightning is one of the most common causes of sudden system failure. However, it is not the only factor. Power surges caused by lightning can burn internal electronic components such as the motherboard, receiver, and transformer. In some cases, even if the system still shows power, the IC chips may already be damaged internally, causing intermittent or complete failure.

Another important factor is the condition of the electrical system itself. Old wiring, unstable voltage supply, and poor grounding can increase the risk of damage during a thunderstorm. In addition, environmental issues such as insects entering the control box can also lead to unexpected short circuits. Ant nests or moisture buildup inside the box can slowly damage the system over time without the homeowner realizing it.

Early Warning Signs of Autogate Problems

Many autogate failures do not happen suddenly. There are often early warning signs that are ignored. For example, the gate may respond slowly, stop halfway, or only work occasionally. Some systems may also produce unusual motor sounds or fail to respond consistently to the remote control.

When these signs appear, it is important to carry out early inspection. Delaying repair often leads to more serious damage, especially after rain or lightning events.
